The Charming Mr. Deeds

Romans 8:12-13So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—for if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live (RSV)

On the way to his execution, Mr. Deeds suggested we stop for a picnic. I succumbed to his plan. He prepared the food. The plainest morsel tasted magical. When I couldn’t eat another bite, I suggested we get on our way to the place of his demise. Mr. Deeds swelled to twice his size, turned a violent green and snapped his fangs in my face. How had I been so deceived? Mr. Deeds wasn’t charming at all. He was a serpent in disguise.

My fear dissipated when I realized that I had the authority to kill him. He had no power over me. One Word and he dissolved into a weak, whimpering blob. One swift kick and Mr. Deeds had no more hold on me. I woke with a start. Thankfully, my vivid dream was only that. A dream. Still its truth remained in my mind. The Mr. Deeds of life look so appealing, until we see them for what they are, a plot to destroy us.  What is Mr. Deeds up to today? One Word and he will be gone. And the one Word is Jesus.

Galatians 5:25If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (KJV).

Prayer: Father God, we are so easily seduced into deeds of our flesh. They look good, feel good, taste good, but Lord; they are not your choice for us. Help us remember what we already know and make the decision that honors you. In Jesus’ name. Amen
