James 4:7– Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (NRSV)
I watched them jockey for position along the highway. The tractor-trailer driver needed to move to the centre lane because the bridges were too low where he was. However, the much smaller gravel truck wouldn’t budge.
When the tractor-trailer driver sped up, the gravel truck driver did the same. Tractor-trailer man tried slowing down. Gravel driver copied.
After several minutes of this foolishness, the larger vehicle simply steered toward his desired goal. The smaller vehicle had to move or be squashed. He gave up and moved over.
Christians confront similar road problems. Obstacles appear. We make attempts to move around them but they remain. We can come to a dead stop or continue to move toward the place we clearly need to be, trusting that obstacles will move.
It seems impossible. We appear to be weak and puny. However, when we know Jesus as our personal Saviour, God’s grace helps us stand up to any difficulty.
Satan is our gravel truck. He may look big and scary, but when we choose the right path, he cannot stand in our way.
Prayer: Lord, we will boast about our weakness so that your power is clearly seen in us. Give us the courage to set our eyes on your goal and move toward the path you set for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
