Psalm 139:13-16–You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit them together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous—and how well I know it. You were there while I was being formed in utter seclusion! You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in your Book (LB).
My friend was surprised and a little unnerved to find that she was expecting another baby. She and hubby certainly wanted another child, but the timing was all wrong. Her first child was only a year old. She didn’t look forward to having two in diapers. She’d have to postpone returning to her job. Her reasons were endless, until she thought about that baby through God’s eyes.
An unexpected pregnancy forces the entire family to reorder and reorganize their lives while God knits together the delicate parts of that new life. We may not be the one giving birth but we definitely need to offer support. “Poor you, not another baby!” But you just started back to school!”“You can’t afford another mouth to feed.”“Have you considered an abortion?”are neither helpful nor God-honoring. Why not tell them about The Knitter instead, and then offer up a few casseroles and some babysitting hours.
Prayer– Creator God, thanks for giving families the courage to set aside their agenda in honour of yours. Because of their willingness, you were able to finish knitting us. Start casting stitches on your needles around the world. Protect the life of each tiny pattern. Amen.
