BP Oil Spill Keeps Gushing, Still No Intelligent Action

It seems the Associate Press as well as other news media have been abused, “ yelled at, kicked off public beaches and islands and threatened with arrest in the nearly three weeks since the government promised improved media access.” So states one AP news story by Tamara Lush who has been covering the spill since it began.

The problem is more distressing than it appears. There have been gag orders from the Oval Office before for national security and other things like the Warren Report was under lock and key for 50 years after Pres. Kennedy was assassinated. But, this president has been going overboard at curtailing information getting to the public. An AP senior managing editor, Michael Oreskes said in the article, “So far, I think the government has done a better job of controlling the flow of information than of controlling the flow of oil in the Gulf.”

It is amazing the there is a 3000 foot ceiling for aircraft over the area. What’s up with that?

The real danger in this mess is that the economy of Louisiana is decimated. If the moratorium on drilling in the Gulf is not lifted, Louisiana may go belly up, just like a lot of the sea life.

Yesterday Judge Andrew Napolitano  had some intriguing things to say on FOX.

In case you missed it, here are some highlights:

In 1989, Exxon and the other oil companies lobbied Congress to set limits on the amount an oil company would have to pay on cleaning up spills. That limit was $75 million. In return, the Federal Gov’t would tell the oil companies where they could drill.

Governor Bobby Jindal told BP that they could drill in 500 feet of water. The Obama administration told BP they couldn’t drill there, they had to drill in 5,000 feet of water. It didn’t matter to Obama that no one had ever drilled that deep before. Since no one had ever drilled that deep, no one had ever had to clean up a spill that deep. [Shock!]

The governor of Louisiana was ready to build barriers along the coast of Louisiana to protect the marshes and the wildlife that lived therein, but Obama believes that his administration can fix every problem that comes along including this catastrophic disaster that has reached epic proportions. Judge Napolitano says, “He’s wrong!” And I concur. He has proven over and over that he is prone to knee-jerk reactions without facts. He has led this nation into a quagmire that does not have a bottom, and it will take decades to recover.

“So, the government that foolishly limited BP's maximum liability, the government that claimed it knew where best to drill, the government that actually stopped locals from protecting their own shoreline — that would be that same government that bankrupted Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Post Office, Amtrak and virtually everything it has managed — now wants to decide who gets BP's cash,” Napolitano said.

What we need is less government and more initiative on the local level. We need less grandstanding and more fact-finding, elbow grease, and intelligence in problem solving. Will the American people ever learn from our mistakes?

In March 2008, the mineral rights to drill for oil on the Macondo Prospect were purchased by BP at the Minerals Management Service’s lease sale.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon_drilling_rig_explosion#Deepwater_Horizon

Gina Burgess said: “It didn’t matter to Obama that no one had ever drilled that deep before.” Actually: “The Deepwater Horizon was a floating semi-submersible Drilling Unit — a fifth-generation, ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, column-stabilized drilling rig. The platform was 396 feet (121 m) long and 256 feet (78 m) wide and could operate in waters up to 8,000 feet (2,400 m) deep, to a maximum drill depth of 30,000 feet (9,100 m).[4] Press releases from Transocean state the platform had historically been used for deeper wells, including the deepest underwater gas and oil well in history at 35,055 feet (10,685 m) in 2009.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon_drilling_rig_explosion#Deepwater_Horizon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transocean#Ultra_deep_water
