Under the Carpet

1 Timothy 1:19Cling tightly to your faith in Christ and always keep your conscience clear, doing what you know is right. For some people have disobeyed their consciences and have deliberately done what they knew was wrong. It isnt surprising that soon they lost their faith in Christ after defying God like that (LB).

My dad loved to tease Amma. (Icelandic for Grandma). When she and Afi (Grandpa) came to visit us on our Dundalk farm, Dad had her at his mercy! One day, fussy Amma so thoroughly swept the kitchen floor that she even lifted the edges of the linoleum. Dad laughingly asked her if she was hiding all the dirt under there. Let’s just say that Amma was not amused.

We all have opportunities to hide dirt. On the outside we may look like we have it all together. Our bumper stickers are intact (Honk if you love Jesus!)

Our Bible is underlined and cross-referenced to the nth degree. Other Christians look to us for guidance. Still, we know that God has called us to obedience in certain areas, yet with conscience reprimanding us, we disobey.

We sweep indiscretions under the dark carpets of our mind and hope no one notices. No one will, for a while. When we lose our faith they might even be surprised. But we knew all along that the dirt pile was getting too big to manage.

Prayer: Dear God, we have ugly stuff hiding in our hearts. Our conscience is screaming about _____________ while we busily sweep it under a carpet. Give us courage to confess our dirt and start fresh with you. In Christ’s name. Amen
