God is busy with Moses but at the same time, he kept his eyes on the folks left back at camp.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’ (Exodus 32:7-9, NIV)
And God intends to punish them for their disobedience.
“I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”(Exodus 32:9-10, NIV)
But Moses intervened on their behalf, reminding God that:
- He’d brought them out of slavery into freedom.
- What would the Egyptians say if you abandoned us?
- Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel.
- You promised Lord.
…And the Lord relented. (Exodus 32:11-14, NIV)
And for you and I he relented greatly by sending his son to die on the cross for us when we too were deep in sin…
Prayer – Father thank you for being a forgiving God… Amen
