He said to them, “When you pray… (Luke 11:2, NIV) Did you catch that? Jesus said “WHEN YOU PRAY” Jesus presumes that we will pray. Do we?
Some might insist that he is fully saying “When you Pray, say… and then he proceeds with what we call The Lord’s Prayer. But the disciples never record that again. It’s not the words of the prayer that count, it is the substance. They understood that Jesus was saying:
- Worship God (Our Father, Your Name, Your kingdom, Your will)
- Then pray for our daily need.
- And forgiveness for sins.
How do your prayers rate? Isn’t it better to pray than to worry about what you pray? Give God your heart yearnings. The Holy Spirit will translate for you…
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
(Romans 8:26-27, NIV)
