Twenty -five years ago, David Meece sang these lyrics, ” As little children, we would dream of Christmas morn and all the gifts and toys we knew we'd find, but we never realized a baby born one blessed night gave us the greatest gift of our lives.” That song is called We Are The Reason.
It's easy to get lost in the Christmas rush and shuffle of holiday shopping, holiday parties, Christmas plays,. Christmas pageants, Christmas musicals, choir concerts, band concerts and Christmas parades. Then there is also Christmas decorating, cooking, holiday baking, etc. etc. etc, the list keeps going in non-stop madness. I find myself completely exhausted and it's only December 2!
Stop the madness. Don't get lost this Christmas in all the typical business of the holiday season. Prioritize. Sit down. Stop and think what needs to be your primary focus this Christmas. Does that to-do list really need to get done? Do you have to attend all those holiday events filling up your calendar? Do you really have to buy that $300 gaming system, $400 flat screen TV or $600 iPad?
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
Where is your heart this Christmas? Mine longs to curl up with family in front of a good Christian movie like The Nativity Story, The Ultimate Gift or Joshua. I don't want to do anymore Christmas shopping or rushing around to get here and there. I want to just stay home and enjoy the blessings that God has given me and my family.
This year, may we focus on gifts of the Spirit ( 1 Corinthians 12) and fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5) instead of how many gifts we have under the tree. The best gift we will ever receive came over 2000 years ago. Don't forget.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)
