I grabbed The Piercing Bible off the library shelf. After all what Christian wouldn’t want the latest Bible version and a piercing one at that! Surely it would give further illumination to the scriptures and touch my heart in a deeper way.
Then I realized it was not a Bible at all but an authoritative work on piercing one’s body parts. What? The Cake Bible, The Gardener’s Bible and dozens of similar volumes crowd book shelves.
Bible is a word meaning the sacred book of the Christian religion, or an essential that is considered an authority on a particular subject.
Perhaps these writers were experts on their topic, but on the one true Bible? Perhaps not.
No matter. The Bible still pierces our hearts in a way we cannot understand and sometimes are not the least bit grateful for. It hits us on our way up into wholeness and on our way down into bad decisions. Why wouldn’t it. After all, it is a two-edged sword.
Hebrews 4:12- For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart (AMP).
We can try The Piercing Bible if we want to add or subtract a tattoo. But if we want a relationship with God, sin removal or holiness, nothing but the original Bible, The Word of God, will do. After all, the B.i.b.l.e. stands for ‘basic instructions before leaving earth.’
Prayer: Lord, give us a yearning to read and study your Word. For Christ’s Sake and for our own. Amen.
