There was too much of him for comfort. He heard people talking about how big and ugly he was. The only noble part of him was his name. Winston. His namesake, Winston Churchill was one of the most influential political leaders of the twentieth century. Unfortunately, mean-spirited people began to call him Ben….because he seemed taller than England’s Big Ben clock tower.
Ben’s heart was as big as his body. He always did his best, no matter what. Finally, somebody realized Ben’s height could be an advantage. Ian realized Ben’s capabilities and in 1984 he brought the young lad to Canada.
In spite of health problems over the years, he and Ian Miller won over $1.5 million in prize money, two consecutive World Cups and an endless list of titles and medals.
Ben is one of the only two horses ever inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. People loved Big Ben. Fans sent him cards and made bran muffins for him. They wished that they had a horse with a heart as big as Ben’s.
Now if Big Ben made such a difference in his world, we can make a difference in ours. We are where we are for a purpose. We are perfectly right for our place in life. God never makes a mistake.
1 Samuel 16:7b-The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart (NIV).”
Prayer: Lord, fill our hearts with something worth looking at. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
