In a recent article, Gina Caswell Kelly mentioned this verse.
And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. (Matthew 28:2, KJV)
Then she noted these thoughts.
“Why did God send an angel to open the tomb? Jesus could have walked right through it.
Why did the angel plunk himself down on the stone? His job was finished, wasn’t it?”
Well, that’s just the point. These verses clarify the meaning.
He said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and released his spirit. (John 19:30b, NLT)
Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. (Hebrews 12:2b, NLT)
And the angel sat too, because Jesus took on our every sin at the cross. He conquered death. The job is finished.
And so the angel sat, to remind us that the job is done.
In Gina’s words:
“The earth shook. The angel came. The guards fell down. The stone was rolled away. And the angel sat. It was done. Christ had risen for you and for me!! Amen? Amen! It made a difference.”
Have you allowed Jesus to make a difference in your life?
Prayer – Father God, thank you that salvation in Christ is a done deal! Thanks for the difference he makes in our lives every day…Amen
