When Stuff Happens

These are some January highlights recorded over the years. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863,   Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935, Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, and Lord Baden-Powell organized the first Boy Scout troop in 1908.  Henry VIII died in 1547 and Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933.

At the time, depending on the population’s age, interests and country of origin, these were either earth-shaking events or events of absolutely no concern… No matter what happened in past Januarys, the world continued. While people ranted and raved about the end of life as we knew it, life went on.

We live in a fearful time… but is it really any worse than anything that’s gone before us?

As Robert Browning said… “God’s in his heaven, all’s right with the world.”

Do not tremble; do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim my purposes for you long ago? You are my witnesses—is there any other God? No! There is no other Rock—not one!”(Isaiah 44:8, NLT)

Prayer – Father, forgive us for forgetting that everything, including us, lies in your hands. Amen
