Before Belts

There you are driving along a city street and someone cuts you off. At the same instant you apply the brakes, you fling your arm across your child, thus protecting the little one. Thankfully someone invented seatbelts and we were all safer.

In the Golden Girls TV sitcom, Dorothy regularly flung her hand over her mother’s mouth to prevent her from saying rude and obnoxious things.

Sometimes I wish Dorothy travelled with me. Too many times, my mouth spouts out rude and obnoxious things. I am not that kind of person, but sometimes awful stuff comes out of me.

Surely you never have this problem, do you? I thought not. I am alone in this hurtfulness. Still, there may be one or two of you who suffer like me…

Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.

(Proverbs 4:23-27, MSG)
