Distracted

Here in Ontario, distracted driving has been the leading cause of death for the last four years. People just aren’t paying attention to what they should be doing… driving! Distracted drivers eat, put on make-up, use phones, read, yell at their children, and worse, when they should be paying attention to their driving.

We all want to blame cell phone users and yes, they are big contributors. However according to the online dictionary, “distracted” means preoccupied, a lack of concentration, anxious, so worried or upset as to be unable to think clearly.

I guess that’s where Martha was.

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” (Luke 10:40, NIV)

She was responsible for dinner but she concentrated on Mary’s behaviour instead. I wonder how awful that dinner tasted, made as it was by an angry person not paying attention. I expect the results were much like what happens when we drive distracted.

Prayer – Father God what do you think of us when we haven’t the sense to use the sense you gave us? Amen
