The only safe prayer, the one we can trust to bring glory to God, is this one.
And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. (Luke 11:2, KJV)
Just see what happened with King Hezekiah. God told good King Hezekiah that he was going to die, but Hezekiah prayed for a longer life and God granted him fifteen more years. (2 Kings 20:6) Over that time, good King Hezekiah lost his bearings somehow.
Yes, he had sons, but some became eunuchs in service to the Babylon king. Another son, Manasseh, reigned for a wicked 55 years and built up high places and altars. He burnt his son as an offering to Molech, practiced witchcraft and had a son who followed in his father’s footsteps. (See 2 Kings 20:18, 2 Kings 21:1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 14, 16, and 20)
God will only give you what you would have asked for if you knew everything he knows. (Timothy Keller)
Now what is your prayer?
Prayer – Lord, when we think we know what to pray, remind us that only you know for sure. Amen
