Speaking of candy (See yesterday’s devotional), The Message Bible offers this hint:
When you’re given a box of candy, don’t gulp it all down; eat too much chocolate and you’ll make yourself sick. (Proverbs 25:16)
Now seriously, didn’t we all know that? Of course we did, but there is that self-control thing again. Let’s be honest, we could make better choices, if we wanted to.
There is a trend among ‘self-controlled’ Christians to ignore what God says about our bodies, but I ask you how can we minister to others if we are wheezing for breath, waddling to the prayer rail and preaching in gasps?
Let your moderation (self-control!) be known unto all men (and women!). (Philippians 4:5, KJV)
So what will make me truly happy this year? The answer is true self-control and common sense choices for all of us, but especially me. The truth will out and for people like me, it generally happens on the hips.
Like Paul says in 1 Timothy 1:15: Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief. I know every excuse known to man and I’ve made up lots. I want this to be the year I whole-heartedly trust God with my body; using my self-control the way it was meant to be used.
Prayer – Lord, we ask for the strength to do just that. Amen
