The stocky customer virtuously ordered an egg white sandwich. Then he added these life-changing words; with bacon and butter please. I couldn’t believe my ears. He’d started out so well on the path to low cholesterol and then cancelled everything with those few words.
Do we ever really listen or think about the things we say? Our words can literally change lives. We announce that all politicians are liars. We don’t even know all politicians and anyway, the Bible says to pray for our leaders. Oops!
We whine about our mothers-in-law, forgetting that one day, God willing, we will be one. The French words for Mother-in-law are la belle–mere, which translates as “the beautiful mother.”
We yell words at our children that leave them scarred for the rest of their lives. I am sure you can add plenty of your own examples here.
Numbers 13:27-28a, 32-They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit.…But….they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored (NIV).
What do we say that negates what we asked for? Like the Israelites we often see/say one thing and announce another. Let’s consider our words today. They show what we really believe.
Prayer: Oh Lord God, may the words of our mouths and the meditations of our heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer (from Psalm 19: 14- NIV) . In Christ. Amen.
