You know the song of course but it was originally written to help children remember their Bible lessons. Think of it this way. (On the first day of Christmas my true love (God) gave to me (the Christian)……
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus who died on the cross for our sin. Two turtle doves are the Old and New Testament while three French hens stand for faith, hope and love. The four calling birds are the four Gospels and the five golden rings are the first five books of the Bible.
Six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation and the seven swans a swimming are seven gifts from the Holy Spirit. Eight maids a-milking remind us of the eight beatitudes and nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Spirit.
Ten lords’ a-leaping? The Ten Commandments, of course and eleven pipers piping are the faithful eleven disciples. We finish with the twelve drummers who remind us of the twelve points in the Apostle’s Creed.
Now then all together now…let’s sing!!!
At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him. (Luke 2, 13,14, MSG)
Prayer- Father we rejoice with singing at your goodness! Amen.
