It started with a frog in cold water, gently heated, cozy, pleasant. Over time the water heated to unbearable temperatures, but the frog didn’t notice and he boiled to death.
It didn’t begin with gas chambers.
It started with politicians dividing people into ‘us and ‘them.’
It started with intolerant hate speech and repeated fake news. It came from lies and misleading information. It created stories that common sense should have dissipated, but the people slowly warmed and they didn’t notice.
Then they stopped caring. When they stopped caring, it didn’t bother them so much and they turned a blind eye.
When they turned a bling eye, the life they knew disappeared. Everything was dead and gone.
They hated their neighbors, they turned them in to the government. And little by little, it became their turn.
The Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country. The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’”
(From Exodus 8:1-4, NIV)
Don’t be a frog, my friend. Don’t be a frog.
