Now, why wouldn’t Jesus pick a horse like the Lone Ranger’s Silver to ride into Jerusalem? What a sight that would make. Think of the snorting horse rearing onto its hind legs, displaying massive power and strength.
But that was not the vision Jesus wanted to create. He saved the horse for end times.
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse, and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, he does judge and makes war. (Revelation 19:11, NIV)
All I really know about donkeys come from watching old westerns where the cranky donkey refuses to budge as the miner tries to drag him into a bleak desert. The truth is that donkeys are not stubborn, but cautious. They are sure-footed and safe. Remember that the path Jesus had to take was steep and unpaved. Think how careful that mare would be with her little one tagging on behind.
There are stories about how donkeys got the cross etched on their back, but basically, they all say that it was because they had the honor of carrying their Saviour.
We too have the honor of carrying our Saviour in our hearts. Be sure-footed and careful in the way you walk, friends.
