Drossed Out

Like me, you might love to eat pomegranates, but probably dislike preparing them. This might help.

Buy the heaviest pomegranates. Cut off the top half-an-inch below the crown. You will be able to see each section. Score the husk along each one, then using both hands, carefully break the pomegranate apart. Hold a section over a bowl of water and loosen the arils (the red ‘seeds’). They will sink and the white membrane will float to the top. Throw away the membrane and catch the arils in a strainer. You can store them in the refrigerator for two weeks or in the freezer for up to three months. Good stuff.

When our lives seem painfully hard, it helps to remember that God is getting rid of our useless membranes. He calls them dross.

Isaiah 1:25-And I will bring my hand again upon you and thoroughly purge away your dross [as with lye] and take away all your tin or alloy (AMP).

Proverbs 66:10-For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver (NIV).

God’s goal is to reveal the good stuff in us and that can’t happen unless our icky membranes are scrubbed away to reveal only the purity of Christ. Don’t worry. We are safe all the while, especially if we freely dunk ourselves into the water of the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 66:9-10– he has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping. For you, God tested us; you refined us like silver (NIV).

When our arils of silver are membrane free, this is our exciting future.

Proverbs 25:4-Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewelery. (NKJV)

Prayer: Lord when we think we can’t stand the rigors of life, remind us that you are simply revealing Christ likeness in us. Amen
