Food Fanatics

Gluten-free is the latest diet fad in North America. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and any foods made from them. It is thought that about 1% of the population has celiac disease, which is treated by removing gluten from the diet. About 5% are gluten intolerant, and less than 1% of the population has wheat allergies. That doesn’t stop thousands of folks from buying into the hype. Have you signed on yet?

Don’t worry if you are a tad behind with gluten; kale is a frightful second, but apparently it is to be abandoned for sea-greens. Yes, you heard it right. Now we are searching the sea for green foods worthy of our swallowing.

No matter the craze, this is how to spot it and save yourself both money and angst. The headlines all have the same theme. The government is out to kill us, big business is destroying our health, and our ancestors ate better than we did. Eat this and earn your salvation. Buy the new miracle cure food from the mountains of pick-a-country, discovered by lonely trappers, chasing previously undiscovered critters across the prairies.

So we all change our eating pattern, eat less junk food and spend more time cooking our own food and voila! We feel better. Common sense should tell us that what really happened was a good dose of moderation.

Moderation is better than muscle, self-control better than political power. (Proverbs 16:32, MSG)

Prayer – God, help us use the common sense you gave us… for that is why you gave it! Amen
