Canada and The United States are said to have the longest undefended border in the world, but Dear Readers, we used to be enemies. America actually invaded Canada and from June, 1812 to February-1815, British, American, Canadian and First Nations forces fought fierce battles on land and sea, with Canada as the prize.
Now, 200 years later, we are celebrating the whole thing by re-enacting it, except this time, I don’t think the guns are loaded.
Today’s experts say that no one won the war. Thousands died or were wounded. All of the countries involved went deeply into debt. Occupied lands were returned to their original boundariesby the Treaty of Ghent. Our countries boast the longest undefended border in the world.
