A calorie is the bed bug of the weight loss world. He crawls into our closet at night and sews all our clothes two sizes smaller than our hips. He eats the good stuff from our plates, leaving only the fat-filled bits that swell our upper arms into sausage rolls.
He jumps up and down on our stomachs during TV shows so that we have to trampoline to the cupboard for potato chips. He ties knots in our exercise shoes so that we can't go to the gym. He chews up the bills in our wallet so that we can't afford to buy lettuce and instead can afford only chocolate chip cookies. He steers our car into ice-cream shops and demands second helpings.
He stirs up words in our mouths so that we tell our weight-loss leaders that we ate everything exactly right and that her scales are wrong.
I am calling my calorie Henry. If I called it Brenda, I would have to take the blame for my weight and that is just not fair! So there! H–e–n–r–y? Where are you Henry???? If you leave me now, I will have to make better choices!
H–e—n–r–y!!!! Don't go!!!! H–E–N–R-Y!!!!!! You get back here RIGHT NOW!!! H–e—n-r–y?????
