Jimmy and Carol Owens wrote this song at the request of pastor Jack Hayford, one of the Jesus Movement folks in 1970. They collaborated with singer Pat Boone and wrote a musical which leaned heavily on this tune.

It’s based on Matthew 10:8|

Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

Malachi 3:10-12 “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.

How are you doing this the instructions in that verse? If Jesus isn’t Lord of everything, then he’s not your Lord at all.
