Yes, note that Jesus meets us where we are. He asks Peter: “Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these others do, with reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion, as one loves the Father?
Peter does not give the answer that Jesus is looking for! “Peter says Yes, Lord, you know that I that I have deep, instinctive, personal affection for You, as for a close friend.”
Jesus is asking for spiritual devotion, not brotherly love. He gives Peter a second chance. Same question and Peter gave the same answer.
Finally, Jesus changed his question to meet Peter where he is. He said the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me with a deep, instinctive, personal affection for Me, as for a close friend? Do you love Me?”
Note that Jesus changed his question to match Peter’s answer, meeting Peter where he was, just as he does with us.
Peter answered Lord, you know everything; You know that I have a deep, instinctive, personal affection for You, as for a close friend. (From John 21:15-18, AMP)
Friend, Jesus will meet you wherever you are and help you grow into that full spiritual devotion.
