Job Description

John 6:29: Jesus answered then, “This is the work of God that you believe in him whom he has sent” (NRSV).

“Now this is what we expect of you,” said my employer. Then she proceeded to explain all my chores and duties. Fulfilling those responsibilities every week qualified me for a salary. Even though this was my first job, I understood that failure to hold up my end would have likely resulted in my dismissal.

Isn’t it wonderful that God has such a short job description for us?   He only asks us to believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. That seems simple enough. However, the Amplified Bible is more explicit.

John 6:29Jesus replied, “This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom he has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on and have faith in His Messenger]” (AMP).

Do we believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Are we cleaving to Him no matter what? Do we trust Him for everything? Do we rely on Him to provide exactly what we need? Do we have faith that no matter what happens, He’s still in charge? Are we good employees?

Prayer: Lord, we a feel a sense of pride when earthly employers pat us on the back for a job well done, but Lord, how are we doing with our heavenly job description? Where we are failing, please help our unbelief.  In Jesus’ name. Amen
