Jonah, the Dove

Who would have thought it! But the truth is here in Jonah 1:1-2

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah (meaning dove!) son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.

In Bible days, people’s names described their character. Now why does God pick someone with the character of a dove to proclaim sin and wickedness to a city of about 120,000?

For that matter, why does he also ask things of us that are totally against our nature? Jesus gives a clue in the following verses.

What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He came to the first and said, Son, go and work today in the vineyard. And he answered, I will not; but afterward he changed his mind and went. Then the man came to the second and said the same [thing]. And he replied, I will [go], sir; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of the father? They replied, The first one. (Matthew 21:28-31)

Prayer – Lord, when you ask us to step out of our comfort zone, give us the courage to obey. In Christ’s name, Amen
