When my nephew was small, he often hid himself away and we would spend time chasing after him, calling his name and expecting the worst.
One day I asked him why he was doing that. He replied that he liked to be alone. I explained how he worried us. “When we call you, please just yell out and tell us you are ok. And he did. Whew. What a relief to a babysitting aunt.
And when God calls?
When they heard the sound of God strolling in the garden in the evening breeze, the Man and his Wife hid in the trees of the garden, hid from God. Genesis 3:8)
Adam could have replied, just like my nephew did.” I am over here.”
God called to the Man: “Where are you?” He said, “I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked. And I hid.” God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from that tree I told you not to eat from?” (Genesis 3:8-10)
Adam could simply have said…” We’re over here” Instead he offers this long explanation.
He said, “I heard the sound of You walking in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” (Genesis 3:10)
1. I heard you.
2. I was afraid
3. I was naked.
4. So I hid.
Where are we on this list? God knows where you are. Answer, why don’t you?
