Missed It

My Dad undertook to build cupboards for Granny but unfortunately for Dad (and maybe for Granny!), they lived two hours apart. Still, Dad took careful measurements and proceeded to make the cupboards in our basement. Finally the day of reveal came. Dad loaded both the upper and lower cabinets into the back of a truck and set off to install them in my grandparent’s house.

Both were delighted to find that everything fit to perfection; well, except the cabinets were ¼ inch too short. Not a big deal, cover it with trim right?

Now that might be ok for cupboards but not ok for people. We are all sinners. There is no trim, no idol wide enough to cover that…

Numbers 32:23b- you may be sure that your sin will find you out (NIV).

Jeremiah 10:3-5 -An idol is nothing but a tree chopped down, then shaped by a woodsman’s ax. They trim it with tinsel and balls, use hammer and nails to keep it upright. It’s like a scarecrow in a cabbage patch—can’t talk! Dead wood that has to be carried—can’t walk! Don’t be impressed by such stuff. It’s useless for either good or evil (MSG).”

Trim as we might, our souls are bare before God. And only Jesus can cover that nakedness.

Prayer: Father God, give us Jesus, lest we die. Amen.
