When my daughter was very young, she took baton/marching lessons. The kids were a motley crew from every age group, the teacher not very experienced.
Then they entered their one and only parade, the children struggled to do the routine they’d learned and they looked to their leader for guidance. That was a total waste of time for she threw herself into a high end presentation with all kinds of fancy moves that none of us had ever seen before. The only thing they had in common was moving forward on the parade ground.
A leader needs to lead in a way that allows followers to follow! That’s the kind of leader Jesus Christ is. He makes it easy for us to follow him.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(Matthew 11:28-30, NIV)
Prayer – Thank you Lord for being the kind of leader we are proud of and are able to follow. Amen
P.S. Today is Ash Wednesday – the first day of Lent!
