Those four words, in foot high letters, have graced my front windows for almost a year now.
At first, they startled passersby. Now no one seems to notice them. Is it all just old news or tired minds? Do we hear or see something so often that eventually our senses are dulled? It’s happened before.
He said, “Go and tell this people:” ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’
Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes.
Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”
(Isaiah 9-11, NIV)
I ask myself the very same question. How long, Lord, how long?
And together we wait, while the Lord tests our patience with his mercy.
