Rejoice! Rejoice!

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 (NIV).

This was shocking, yet long-awaited news to Joseph. Being an Israelite, he had been told the prophecies of the Messiah over and over and over. Throughout Old Testament history, there are many references to the coming Messiah. Daniel calls Him the Anointed One, ( Daniel 9:24-26), Isaiah called Him the Key of David, Emmanuel, the Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God.

The Israelites were looking for a Savior to deliver them from oppression and years of suffering, slavery and constant conflict, but who would have ever guessed the long awaited king would come in the form of a babe born into a meager, humble existence?  It was not what they were expecting: “…rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself  by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:7-9 (NIV)

He cold have come in the form of a magnificent king in all His splendor and Glory. He could have overthrown kings and kingdoms, and someday He will. Yet, instead, He chose to humble Himself to teach us to be humble. He wanted us to know Him and love Him and choose to be like Him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

God came in the form of Christ. He is Emmanuel, God with us and He came to show us His love so that we might understand and follow by example.

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV)

The old Christmas carol O Come, O Come Emmanuel refers to Messiah as:

Emmanuel : Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)

Rod of Jesse :Romans 15:12 (NIV)

Key of David : Isaiah 22:22 (NIV),  Revelation 3:7 (NIV)

Lord : Revelation 19:16 (NIV)

Rejoice, Rejoice, He has come to thee O Israel
