Rooting Through

When is the last time you rooted through all the stuff in your house, I mean really rooted with the thought of discarding most of it? I am trying to do that now but it is a long and painful process. I am not planning on moving anytime soon, but I am looking at my stuff with a jaundiced eye.

As I examine every letter, ornament, and dish, I ask myself these questions.

  1. Do I love it enough to keep it?
  2. Would the kids throw it out?

That way I can decide on its home. If I really love it, I will keep it for the time being. If the kids wouldn’t care, I can pass the item on to a good home before they get their hands on it.

Those rules also apply to my lifestyle. Is that habit good enough to keep or is it best tossed aside before the kids find out about it? Hopefully, they will toss out their own bad stuff and not take on any of mine.

This is one thing I am taking with me where ever I go and one that I pray my children grab hold of and keep.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV)

Prayer- God, keep us walking away from our collected junk, toward you and your goals for us. Amen.
