Self-Absorption

Do you love yourself? Remember that God says to love your neighbor as yourself. What does that mean exactly? The dictionary defines self-love as a regard for one’s own happiness.

I don’t mean are you pouring yourself into everything, everybody, everywhere. I do mean do you spend your day dwelling on your failures, your losses and your imperfections? Do you run yourself down all the time? Friends how is this self-love or self-care? Instead it is self-absorption, meaning preoccupation with one’s own emotions, interests, or situation.

Instead, do you allow grace for yourself, the same kind of grace you give a co-worker or friend?

If they make a mistake at their job do you criticize them to their face all the next week? Of course not.

But are you doing that to yourself? That is not self-love but instead self-absorption.

The Bible defines self-absorption this way.

Don’t be naive. There are difficult times ahead.  As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, ruthless, treacherous, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God.  They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people. (2 Timothy 3:1-5, MSG)

Prayer- God, we don’t want to be self-absorbed, but we do want to obey your word and take care of ourselves in your way. Help us live in love, with self-love, not self-absorption. For Christ! Amen.
