Sheepish Gossip

Sheep have other traits which are not so wonderful. They blindly follow the first sheep that moves, literally! When they do, they may end up over a cliff or in slaughter pens.

Lately this sheep trait seems prevalent among Christians. I just received, for possibly the 100th time, an email denouncing well-known charities for the way they handle their finances.

I checked it out on Snopes.com years ago. All of the information is false but this lie continues to be mindlessly passed on to others, with a simple click of a button.

A renowned Christian pastor/author was recently branded in one of these emails. Someone accused him of sliding away from his Godly beliefs.  Did anyone check this out? Oh no, we took it blindly to a cliff and dragged one of God’s people over it with us.

Dear Friends, gossip is gossip no matter where it is found. A lie is a lie, even though it is easier to share than ever. Our moms used to tell us to ‘think before we spoke.’ I’m asking you now to ‘think before you click that computer mouse.’

Iceland produces a strain of sheep called ‘leader sheep.’ They do not blindly follow the flock. They sense danger. They’ve been known to lead both flocks and shepherds home during blizzard-like conditions.

Are we leader sheep? Or are we blindly following others into the ‘ruination of lives’ business?

You shall not go up and down as a dispenser of gossip and scandal among your people, nor shall you [secure yourself by false testimony or by silence and] endanger the life of your neighbor. I am the Lord.  (Leviticus 19:16, AMP)

Prayer: God, you are God. When we forget that, drag us back from our self-made cliffs, into Christ. Amen.
