Small Comfort

When life is scary, crazy and even awful, what do you want? In the midst of the Irma destruction in Florida, after admitting there was no electricity, no gas, no water, one resident sent out a plaintiff cry. “Does anyone out there have a cup of coffee?

A small comfort is that one thing that makes you feel better in the midst of a catastrophe.

I admit that I too love a coffee, that first sip in the morning is almost a swooning moment for coffee aficionados. What is your small comfort?

After a power losing storm we had here, a neighbour arrived caring a coffee she had perked on her barbecue. The trouble was, she didn’t offer any to me. It was just bragging rights for her.

In the midst of the devastation in our friends and neighbours live, will we take the time to off them a small comfort? We may think there is too much to do; that we cannot help because the little bit we can give is too little.

Think again. A small comfort doesn’t cost much, but it may be that one thing that our suffering community needs.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Colossians 3:12, NIV)

Prayer- Father, show us how to help and then give us the gumption to do it. Amen.
