Micah 6:8–He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God. (AMP)
When I was about ten, several of us were swimming in the local river. The current caught me and I was swept downstream. Without thought for his own safety, my cousin Don heard my cry for help; swam after me and dragged me from the current’s grasp. Even though he was older and stronger than I, he too struggled in the fierce flow.
It’s not always easy to go against the flow. The complexity of life, people, circumstances, all conspire to sweep us off into easier directions. Still, wise choices make for lasting results. In my case, Don’s determination to do the right thing made it possible for me to live and eventually come to know Jesus as my personal Savior. Don surely didn’t know that at the time. He just swam upstream because it was the right thing to do.
In which direction will we be swimming today?
Prayer: Lord, when we want to float lazily down river on an inner tube, shake us up and point us upstream to where the action is. Amen.
