The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” The man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
The Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. (From Genesis 2)
BUT THEN the Garden of Eden became the Garden of Weed-in. Yes, friends, disobedience entered that joyous spot. Satan showed up and misled his listeners who apparently hadn’t listened well in the first place.
God said “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” (Genesis 2:16)
The woman heard (and repeated) “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.” (Genesis 3:2) God did not say, “You can’t touch the tree.”
The woman’s first mistake was chatting up sin, then misinterpreting God’s word and then looking at the food as tasty, beautiful and finally wise. Then she even shared her sin.
What weeds linger in your garden of Eden today? Our only response should be to destroy them. Do not linger over what you think they are. They are not.
