The family returned to Nazareth where Jesus grew up healthy and strong, filled with God’s wisdom and God’s favor on him. Every year meant a trip to Jerusalem for Passover. As usual, they went the year that Jesus turned 12.
After the celebrations, they started for home but assumed that Jesus was with the other travelers. By evening they realized they had misplaced their son! They turned back to Jerusalem to find him. He was missing for three days!
They finally found him in the temple, listening to the religious leaders and asking questions. Everyone listening was amazed at his questions and answers. His mother asked, “Why have you done this to us; we have been searching everywhere.”
They didn’t understand his answer. “But why did you need to search? Didn’t you know that I must be in my father’s house?”
They returned home together and Luke records that he was obedient, growing in wisdom and stature and favor with God and all the people. And his mother Mary stored all these things in her heart.
