Love is a decision, NOT a whim of the heart. Love is deciding to do the right thing even when you don’t feel like it. Love is baking your hubby a pie when you are upset with him.
Why does that work? We can decide to love or not. We can do things that speak love even though we do not feel love at the time. Then… in time…we will actually begin to feel that love for real.
Pitter-Patter first love is rarely the lasting kind. Will you love that person when they come home all smelly and sweaty from work? Or when they are too tired to vacuum the floor? Or when dinner is late? Or when you have to visit his relatives? What about when they get the flu and you have to clear up?
Love is hard. The wedding is a pretend happiness. It is not reality. What follows when you have to live in a three-floor walkup? Or is the rent due and there is no cash to pay it?
This is love.
And what this love consists of is this: that we live and walk in accordance with and guided by His commandment, His orders, ordinances, precepts, and teaching. This is the commandment, as you have heard from the beginning, that you continue to walk in love, guided by it and following it. (2 John 1:6)
