Unfruitful

I had high hopes for all the morning glories I planted around my house. The back porch and the side porch plants were spindly indeed but my how they bloomed. The plants at the front porch held so much promise. Leaves sprouted in every direction. They thickly drooped over the entrance. People ducked to enter the house, but nary a bloom did they offer, not one single flower.

In John 4, Jesus speaks of the fields ripe with harvest, but he obviously wasn’t talking about my lazy flowers. We’ve had frost now, so their chance to reach maturity is done.

Is that how you feel when you share the Gospel? Do not be dismayed, dear friend. Jesus goes on to say this.

The saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”(John 4:37-38, NIV)

All Jesus asks of us is that we do his will. Perhaps we see growth. Maybe we don’t. We are only one of many sharing the Gospel of Christ in faith.

Prayer-God, help us to be faithful no matter what we see little growth before us. Amen.
