Volun-told

“No one volunteered to organize the office party so the boss gave the job to me. I’ve been voluntold…again!” she whimpered.

Who hasn’t found themselves in that mess? How do we fight it?

Maybe we need to volunteer earlier. Many worthy organizations, including churches, form a committee for one good cause or another, but then disband for lack of leadership.  Oh, everyone wants to help but no one wants to take on the responsibility.

The Bible suggests that volunteering should be done with abandon because it causes people to praise God.

Judges 5:2-When they let down their hair in Israel, they let it blow wild in the wind. The people volunteered with abandon, bless God (MSG).

Judges 5:9- My heart is with Israel’s princes, with the willing volunteers among the people. Praise the LORD (NIV).

Of course, we ought to pray about our volunteer position. We must do God’s will, but why say no if God tells us yes?

Even God voluntold on occasion

Numbers 27:18-So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him (NIV).

Thank You, Lord that volunteers are only people who haven’t volunteered yet; or is that voluntold?

Prayer: Lord, thanks for moving us into positions that are right and good and perfect for us. Give us the courage to take on your jobs before you have to voluntold us. In Christ's name. Amen.
