When Faith Meets Believing

Mary is barely pregnant. She walks in Elizabeth’s doorway and says hello and Elizabeth answers with this news that could only have come through the Holy Spirit. says this.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!  But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”  (Luke 1:41)

In just these few words, Elizabeth is:

Filled with the Holy Spirit.

Confirms to Mary what Mary heard from the angel.

Blesses the child Mary carries.

And then she thanks God for the honour of Mary visiting.

Recognizes that Mary is carrying the Lord. Her own baby leaps for joy in her womb!

Obviously, Mary is fully committed to what lies ahead She has set her face to service and commitment. She is trusting God no matter what happens next, no matter the unneighborly gossip, Joseph’s questioning…no matter what.

How do we fare when we are set with a problem?

Will we be like Mary, steadfast and unwavering?  Or not?
