Samaritan’s Purse Workers Abducted in Darfur

At Everyday Christian we’ve written extensively about work Christian humanitarian organizations do around the globe.

It’s no secret that many of the places where this work happens are unstable politically and socially in addition to levels of poverty many Americans cannot fathom experiencing first-hand.

Occasionally these truths intersect in troubling ways, as has been the case now for Samaritan’s Purse, the North Carolina-based relief organization headed by evangelist Franklin Graham.

Three Samaritan’s Purse workers – one of which was a 36-year-old woman from California – were abducted Tuesday in Darfur, the war-torn Sudanese province infamous for its high level of violence and abuse toward women. The trio was taken by a group of armed men south of the regional capital.

In a press release, Samaritan’s Purse said it has given $83.7 million toward relief in Sudan since 2001. This includes medical relief, clean water projects, food distributions, agricultural projects and the rebuilding of hundreds of churches destroyed in the country’s civil war.

“I have visited Darfur several times and it is one of the most difficult places in the world to work. I’m asking for the prayers from people around the world for a quick resolution and the safe return of our Samaritan’s Purse staff,” Graham said.

I was at the NY Independent film fest and the one film that stood out was Attack on Darfur. It brought the political aspect to a forefront and made me aware of the terrible things going on in today’s world. It won Best feature film so I guess they thought it was important too!
