Thomas Nelson, Zondervan spar over illustrations

Two giants of the Christian publishing industry are in court dueling over illustrations made for a children’s book series.
At issue is a character named Gigi created for Thomas Nelson by California freelance illustrator Meredith Johnson. Gigi was a solid moneymaker for Thomas Nelson. However Johnson, apparently displeased with her pay according to Thomas Nelson, created characters for the Princess Twins Series by Zondervan. Thomas Nelson claims a breach of contract because of the similarities between Gigi and the princesses.
As is often the case in such suits regarding art and music, the similarities – or lack thereof – are in the eyes of the beholder.
For a complete rundown of the case, and a look at the illustrations to make your decision, check out the Nashville Business Journal.
