“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
(Matthew 26:52-53, NIV)
In the time of Jesus, a standard Roman legion consisted of about 6,000 men. These legions were made up of the best Roman soldiers. They weren’t wimps! They carried armour and supplies weighing 60-100 pounds. They fought fiercely.
6000 members times 12 legions make up an overwhelming force of 72,000 angels, enough to cover all of Israel!
We can presume that Jesus could have called the very best angels, perhaps those with other responsibilities.
He could have but he didn’t. Jesus understood his mission, terrible though it was.
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross.
(Philippians 2:8, NIV)
