Dealing with Memory Loss

Whether it is Alzheimer’s or another type of memory loss there are guidelines that will help you navigate the storm. I wish I had this list when my mom suffered from dementia.

Never argue, just agree with the person

Can’t reason with them? Divert the conversation to a different topic.

Never shame the person. Distract them from the event.

Don’t lecture. It gets you nowhere.

Stop saying I told you so.

Reminisce when they want to. They do remember that.

Encourage them in what they can do. Can’t do upsets everyone.

Treat them like an adult. You can do this by asking, not demanding.

This is not an extensive list just as this Bible verse is not the whole Bible, but it will get you started in both areas,

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)
