Eight years ago, the world was introduced to a very unique family. The Duggar Family was introduced to the nation in a Parents Magazine article. At that time, Michelle had only 14 children. Shortly after that, TLC contacted the Duggars and began running weekly shows about this amazing family.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar
Jim Bob and Michelle met back in high school. She was active cheerleader and during high school, got saved at a Revival and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of her life. Shortly after that revival, Jim Bob and a friend from that church went to visit the new convert. That's how they first met. A short time later, Michelle was hired at his family's yogurt shop and a friendship began.
Quiverfull
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar married July 21st, 1984. At that time, they chose to use the birth control pill. They thought, “We don’t want children right now. We can’t afford them. We want children in our timing, when we’re ready.” Four years later they decided to have their first child. Then, Michelle went back on the pill, but she conceived and had a miscarriage. At that point they talked with a Christian medical doctor and read the fine print in the contraceptives package. They found that while taking the pill you can get pregnant and then miscarry. They were grieved! They were Christians! They were pro-life! They realized that their selfish actions had taken the life of their child. This belief is the basis for the Quiverfull Movement. Children are seen as a blessing from the Lord. Those who accept the Quiverfull doctrine believe life and death is in God's hands. It is not for us to choose if or when we will have children and how many we will have. God has a purpose and a plan for everything and God always provides. They have left their trust and their family planning in the hands of God.
How Do They Do It?
Having twenty children may sound completely insane to most of the world population. Yet they have a peace about it that passes all understanding. They know without a doubt God will take care of them and He has proven that over and over and over many times in their lives.
The Duggars are completely debt free and run several successful businesses. They home-school all their children. Only the oldest, Josh, has left the nest. Josh married Anna two years ago and they now have two children of their own. As each child graduates, the boys have chosen to start their own businesses and the older girls help their mom, with home-schooling and taking care of the house and home. So far, none of the Duggars have wanted to attend college, but they are all taught from a very young age to work together, stay debt free, love each other and God will always provide.
Josie
Michelle's 19th child, Josie Duggar, came into the world at 25 weeks. That's 3 months early. Michelle had a galbladder issue and they had to take Josie. Josie spent a lot of time in a NICU and at times things were life-threatening for both Michelle and Josie. However, today, Josie is a little miracle doing quite well. She will celebrate her 2nd birthday in December, and Michelle is in great shape. Jim Bob told reporters she's probably in better shape now than she was ten years ago. She is exercising an hour every day, eats well and is under the care of a high risk doctor. God has provided and God has everything under control. Congratulations Duggar Family.
