Euphemisms

Speaking of words, (see yesterday’s devotional), the world uses words to soften the truth.

I gained two pounds this week translates into- I had a little slip up.

Sorry your husband died becomes- so sad you lost your husband. (P.S. I didn’t lose him, I know exactly where he is!)

Why don’t we speak truth? Is it because we are protecting the other person? Or is it because we are shielding ourselves?

The context of the following verse is about praying in tongues, but the truth still holds.

So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. (1 Corinthians 14:9, NIV)

Prayer –  Lord, may we always speak the truth in love. For Christ who always spoke truth to us. Amen (Ephesians 4:22)
